How Much Does a Vinyl Fence Cost on Long Island?

Vinyl is the most requested fence material in Suffolk and Nassau County, and the first question almost every homeowner asks is what it runs per foot. The honest answer is that the price depends on four things: the style you pick, the height, the ground you are putting it in, and how much old fence has to come out first.

Typical installed ranges on Long Island

Most residential vinyl projects land between roughly $45 and $85 per linear foot installed. A six-foot solid privacy panel sits toward the middle of that range. A four-foot picket or a two-rail ranch style sits lower, often in the $35 to $55 range. Heavy-wall panels, wood-grain textures, tongue-and-groove privacy with a lattice or accent top, and any color other than white sit higher.

For a sense of scale, fencing a typical quarter-acre backyard on Long Island usually means somewhere between 130 and 200 linear feet. At mid-range pricing that puts most privacy jobs in the mid four figures to low five figures.

Gates are priced separately. A single walk gate typically adds a few hundred dollars. A double drive gate costs more because it needs heavier posts, stronger hardware, and usually a drop rod set into concrete to keep the leaves from sagging over time.

What moves the price up

Post depth is the biggest hidden variable. Long Island soil changes fast, sometimes within the same street. Sandy stretches near the South Shore dig easily. The rocky glacial till running through parts of Smithtown, St. James, and much of the North Shore does not. When we hit rock, old buried footings, or a slab nobody knew was there, digging takes longer and the labor line goes up.

Grade changes matter just as much. A yard that slopes has to be either stepped or racked. Racked panels are cut to follow the ground and cost more per section than a straight run on flat land. Yards with retaining walls, window wells, or a walkout basement usually need custom panel heights at those points.

Removal and disposal of an old fence is its own line item. So is root work, shrub relocation, or clearing overgrowth to get a clean line. If your existing fence has posts set in large concrete footings, pulling them is real labor.

What keeps the price reasonable

Straight runs cost less than yards full of corners. Every corner post means another hole, another set of brackets, and more layout time. Simple rectangular backyards price better than yards broken up by patios, sheds, decks, and pool equipment.

Buying the right grade of vinyl the first time also saves money over the life of the fence. Thin-wall panels sold at big box stores may look identical on day one, but they chalk, sag, and crack under the freeze-thaw cycle we get every winter here. Heavier-wall extrusion with a UV inhibitor package and internal aluminum reinforcement in the bottom rail holds its line for decades. The difference in material cost is small. The difference in year ten is not.

Combining work into one visit helps too. If you know you eventually want a pool enclosure or a driveway gate, pricing it with the main run is cheaper than mobilizing a crew twice.

Financing the project in stages

Some homeowners fence the backyard first for privacy and pets, then add front-yard picket or a driveway gate the following season. That works, and it spreads the cost. Just tell your installer the full plan up front so post sizes, colors, and lot numbers can be matched later. Vinyl colors do vary slightly between production runs, and a white installed three years apart can read as two different whites in direct sun.
